Apollo Medical Devices is commercializing a rapid blood testing technology with an anticipated turnaround time of five minutes using just a single drop of blood. According to the National Library of Medicine, blood chemistry tests are the most frequently ordered tests by physicians in the United States with a typical turnaround time ranging anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Point-of-care blood chemistry testing can reduce this turnaround time to enable faster diagnosis and decision-making, with the overarching goal of better patient care.
Apollo’s cost-effective, proprietary platform technology is currently being developed to safely and effectively provide patient blood chemistry test results via a portable analyzer at the patient’s bedside. First, a single drop of blood would be placed directly onto our patented microfluidic-based sensor cartridge. The blood rapidly flows across the cartridge and can be ready for analysis in seconds. The disposable cartridge would then be placed into the portable analyzer and results are returned within five minutes. The Apollo system is being designed to minimize the training required for use, and eliminate complicated protocols or expensive equipment. Replacing painful vein sticks with finger stick blood tests should, pending FDA 510(k) clearance, enhance patient comfort, decrease clinician sample acquisition time, and open the field of use greatly to include first responders, military, and disaster relief organizations.
Punkaj is a co-inventor of Apollo's technology and has worked on the development of this technology since inception four years ago, producing numerous patents and publications. He led the research and development of the disposable, POC cartridges. Punkaj earned his MS in Biomedical Engineering in 2011 and is a PhD candidate at Case Western Reserve University.
Brian has worked on the development of Apollo's low-cost blood analyzer since inception. His engineering career has been a mix of electrical product development and Field Application Engineering, with over ten years of experience in each, most recently as a Field Application Engineer at Avnet. Brian’s skills include analog, digital and power circuit design, optoelectronics and electrical product development. He earned a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Cincinnati and a MS in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
James is a Senior Scientist with Apollo. His skills include synthesis of sensitive organometallic compounds, materials characterization, data analysis, and experimental planning. While at CWRU, James studied the synthesis of unusual gold and copper compounds, focusing on their properties as luminescent and catalytic materials, which resulted in the publication of three journal articles and an award from Johnson Matthey via the International Precious Metals Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from Case Western Reserve University.
Phuong is a Senior Scientist at Apollo. Her expertise is in the development and preclinical validation of a regenerative medicine therapy for musculoskeletal tissue repair, which has led to numerous peer-reviewed publications. Her skills include cell culture and characterization, biomaterial fabrication and characterization, study design and management, protocol development, and data analysis. Phuong received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
Russ Donda is an entrepreneur-in-residence for GLIDE and BioEnterprise. Among a number of startup projects, Mr. Donda was the founding CEO and chairman of the board for ViewRay Inc. (www.viewray.com), which was subsequently funded by OrbiMed Advisors, Fidelity Biosciences, Aisling Capital, Kearny Venture Partners, and Siemens Venture Capital (SVC) GmbH, and is now publicly traded. He was a founding member and co-chair of investment review for the Emergent Growth Fund (www.emergentgrowth.com), an angel investment fund focused on technology businesses. Mr. Donda is versed in start-up operations, strategic planning, development related issues, marketing, patent law, intellectual property management, and strategic alliance structuring and is, himself, named as an inventor on 15 patents.
With a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Administration, Artie Lynnworth retired from 40-years in successful corporate leadership at two Fortune 500 companies, managing manufacturing plants around the USA and businesses around the globe. Production plants he managed varied in size, to over 700 employees, and as senior vice president for worldwide businesses his annual sales responsibility exceeded $0.5 billion. His leadership is noted for turn-around performance in safety, environment and profits, taking worst-in-class organizations and bringing them to award-winning best-in-class. He is a published author, public speaker and volunteer mentor, dedicated to helping others achieve full potential.
Brad Pulver is a senior executive with experience in a variety of startup, industry and consulting roles. He co-founded and managed two startup medical device companies – one still in early stage, the other generating positive cash flow. He led all phases of medical device company and product lifecycle – capital raising, conceptualization, product design and development, regulatory approval, manufacturing & supply chain, sales and marketing, domestic & international business development, distribution, customer service, P&L management responsibility, development of strategic partnerships. Previously, he managed two $300M+ product divisions of a global industrial, safety and electrical distributor. 10 years of experience as a management consultant, advising Fortune 500 companies on a host of operational and strategic issues.
